A talk on the late-gothic canvas painting in Cracow
On 13th September 2018 I will have a presure to present a talk at the meeting of Genealogy Society of Lesser Poland (Małopolskie Towarzystwo Genealogiczne), at 5.00 pm in Europejski Hotel in Cracow. I will present the results of my research on a late gothic painting of Salvator Mundi from the Cathedral in Cracow. For a long time this painting has been considered as Early-modern and finally the renovation before the exhibition Cracow 1000-2000 revealed that the painting is in fact late-gothic and the only medieval painting on canvas survived in Lesser Poland. The results of those renovation was published by Małgorzata Schuster-Gawłowska (on technical issues), ansd by Helena Małkiewiczówna (style and iconography), who established that the Cracow painting was based on a lost Early-Netherlandish original and dated it to ca. 1480-90. The donor depicted in the painting so far remained unknown.
My research on this painting resulted in proposed identification of the donor; I also think that the dating of this painting may be slightly later (early 16th c.) and that the painting may have been given to the Cracow Cathedral as late as in the 17th century. I will present the results of my research on this meeting. More information: http://www.mtg-malopolska.org.pl/naszespotkania.html
